Young people in Barrhead working towards community garden facelift

Tue 17th October 2017

Young people in Barrhead are getting creative with a view to transforming a local community space in the town!

A new block of our Creative Pathways programme is running now. Our artists Heather and Lucy are working with a group of 15 over twelve weeks to hone creative techniques and encouraging them to think like environmental designers.

Building on the consultation process started by our previous programme’s participants earlier this year, the group are hard at work renovating upcycled materials for a new community garden for the Robertson Street development in the town.

The garden installation, part of our partnership with Barrhead Housing Association, will take place in the coming weeks. The young people have been painting and stencilling large plant pots and are learning about landscaping techniques.

The course is also about passing on employability skills and the group are completing SQA units in this.

One of the components involves making mood boards, and the team came up with a creative way of doing so: taking photograph portraits to create collages featuring their hobbies and interests.

In the last week, the team have also been learning about the Mexican sugar skull tradition associated with the Day of the Dead. They are researching their own skull designs and preparing for a UV sugar skull photoshoot!

The programme is funded by Barrhead Housing Association, the Scottish Government’s People and Communities Fund, the Scottish Children’s Lottery and Inspiring Scotland.
