Young people getting inspired by the City of Edinburgh on Creative Pathways

Wed 04th October 2017

A new group of young people on Creative Pathways in Edinburgh are getting inspired by the city and delving into the rich contents of Edinburgh Castle itself!

Thanks to Impact Arts’ partnership with Historic Environment Scotland, our artists are able to guide participants through weekly inspiration trips in the Castle.

The group have already been getting creative off the back of their trips – here we can see an example of the contemporary photographic twist they are putting on Renaissance portraits they have seen inside.

Meanwhile, the team have met with artists Jacob Kerray and Clare McAllister from the Talbot Rice gallery, who will be collaborating with participants on a mural for their final showcase.

Participants are getting involved in a variety of individual projects as well.

Jordan is creating a series of black-and-white
street photographs to accompany two poems by Scottish poet Robert Fergusson (1750 – 1774). Fergusson died at age 24, and Jordan wants to honour his
memory by taking photographs of modern day Edinburgh and by changing every second line of
Ferguson’s poems to feature contemporary language.

Liam is creating a series of football badges with a twist; by taking
the badges of rival teams and countries, Liam transforms the original badge
into one that portrays unity, showing that it doesn’t matter who you support – at the end of the day everyone should be able to come together to support the beautiful game.

Calum has created a piece of original writing based on a young person
dealing with anxiety. He has been looking at ways to build tension in his
work, what fear means to him and how he wanted to express that in his writing. The writing is being incorporated into a visual piece as well – a City Centre street map, where he will make
marks, taking the viewer through both a written and visual journey.

The Creative Pathways course in Edinburgh is funded and supported by Skills Development Scotland’s Stage 2 and Stage 3 Employability Funds, meaning that participants are getting close support with job-hunting and CV skills.

Additional support comes from Canongate Youth, Historic Environment Scotland and Inspiring Scotland.

There are still spaces on the programme for those aged 16+. Workshops take place between 9.30am and 4pm from Tuesday until Friday (at Canongate Youth in Edinburgh City Centre and at Edinburgh Castle on a Friday). The programme will be running until Friday 10th November 2017.

If you are interested in joining the course or making a referral, please contact Rosanna Hall on 07795233408 or email [email protected]. Please note, all referrals must come through an SDS Advisor.
