WEAREGOVAN is an intergenerational project and part of Impact Arts’ Craft Café initiative in the Govan and Elderpark area. Since October 2010, four young people and four community elders have worked together one evening per week on a joint creative outcome.
The culmination of this work has been the design and creation of a mural for The Elderpark community Centre on Elderpark Street. Double-click to view it in all its glory.
The project has been a place to share skills and experiences as well as a place to house participants’ memories within Govan, from the present and from the past. WEAREGOVAN has acted as a forum; a space to share opinions, experiences and to create artwork between the generations.
Craft Cafe happens every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10am- 4pm at the Elderpark Centre and is a project where local Govan residents who are 50 years-old or more can access a welcoming space to meet, enjoy a hot drink, have a chat, learn new skills and make art and craft items with the support of a professional artist.
The Elderpark Centre has been transformed into a vibrant creative space. As well as the transformation of the buildings interior, local residents have created wonderful pieces of visual art as part of the Craft Café, including paintings, pottery and even bespoke chess pieces. The project brings wonderful benefits to the local residents and Impact Arts is committed to continuing its support in order that it can become a permanent part of the Elderpark Community.
