Impact Arts Open the Door to The Young Gallery, Scotland’s First Gallery Dedicated to Showcasing the Artwork of Children and Young People

Impact Arts, the UK’s most innovative community arts charity are officially opening the Young Gallery on the 28th of June 2012. The gallery is the first of its kind in Scotland to exclusively show the work of children and young people aged 3-18 years old.

The Young Gallery is located in the East of Glasgow, an area undergoing wide-scale regeneration ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Sword Street in Dennistoun, is home to Impact Arts’ ‘Creative Street’, a hub of workshops that include flagship programmes, Eco-chic Fashion Freak, Fab Pad and Urban Green.

The gallery will be opened by Joan Parr, Portfolio Manager for Education, Learning and Young People, Creative Scotland.

Joan welcomed the new gallery and said:

‘The Young Gallery will offer children, their schools, families and carers an inspiring space to create and present their own work and develop their individual creative talents in a welcoming environment. I’m delighted to be here on such an important day for the young people of the city’s East End.’

Internationally acclaimed artist Carla Fullerton will also help launch The Young Gallery. Carla was involved with Impact Arts from a young age and has gone on to win numerous awards including the Glasgow Sculpture Studios MFA Graduate Fellowship Prize 2008. One of the aims of the gallery is to encourage children and young people to pursue a career in the arts where they normally wouldn’t have had the opportunity.

Lynne Carr, Chief Executive at Impact Arts said:

‘We believe that by having access to arts, young people learn to express themselves positively and make sense of the world around them. Through engaging with The Young Gallery, participants will achieve increased confidence, self-esteem and a sense of their culture. We are thrilled Joan and Carla can join us to open the door to The Young Gallery – we have so many exiting plans for the future and this is just the start!’
