Craft Cafe Govan, one our workshops for older people in the local area, welcomed back Humza Yousaf, MSP for Glasgow Pollok.

The members were delighted to have Mr Yousaf back at the Craft Cafe, to see what they have been working on and speak to him about why they come along and the importance of having Craft Cafe in their lives.

Member Willie, said; “It’s phenomenal here, to get the opportunity to do stuff like this. I’ve never looked back since I started. Its honestly changed my life.”

Mr Yousaf took the opportunity to get involved in the activities an helped up-cycle some of the furniture as well as taking part in the daily exercise routine that is put on for the older people.

“I was delighted to visit the Craft Cafe at Elderpark Centre in Govan to spend time with the staff, volunteers and members”, said Mr Yousaf.

“Although the art produced was exceptional, the project is about so much more. This is a place for people to forget about the stresses of everyday life. Many who attend will be dealing with bereavement, loneliness or declining health. The Craft Cafe provides an opportunity to focus on creating something beautiful while having a laugh amongst friends. Crucially, those who attend typically note a significant improvement in their health and well-being.

The programme is focused on the power of art to improve quality of life and the staff are so clearly dedicated to the potential arts has to enhance our lives.

I look forward to seeing the project continue to grow and develop.”

Craft Cafe Govan runs every week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Elderpark Centre in Govan. If you are over 60 and interested in coming along, please contact Lead Tutor Charlotte Craig on 0779308195 or email [email protected]
