The Urban Green: Crahill project is 9 weeks old this week! To celebrate, we thought we’d start blogging about the brilliant work that’s taking place!
Seven local young people aged between 16-24 have been learning new skills in:
They’ve been putting there new found learning to good use, by making over four underused green spaces in Cranhill. These skills can also help them attain a qualification; those on offer are SQA’s, Arts Awards and a certificate from the Royal Caledonia Horticultural Society.
Working with the Beacon Arts Centre, the Veterans Centre and the Cranhill Development Trust, young people have encountered some surprises along the way – including meeting a sub-species of vole native to the Cranhill area. There have been challenges too, with young people being tasked to create their own dish using an ingredient they have harvested from the garden. So far they’ve made smoothies, signature salads, soups and stews.
The current programme is scheduled to run for 18 weeks, with a new group of young people starting after that.
You can watch a video of Deborah Armstrong, the Lead Tutor talking about the project on STV, and also hear from Arts Co-ordinator Nicola Wood on the work that is taking place in the community in another video filmed in the STV studio.
If young people would like to get involved they can contact Nicola Wood on 0141 575 3001 or [email protected].
