Barrhead’s Residents Get Creative!

Thu 23rd January 2014

East Renfrewshire is about to get a whole lot more creative! Impact Arts is delivering an exciting programme of workshops for local young people aged 16-25 between January and March 2014. The new programme, called The Drab to Fab Makeover is an innovative partnership between Barrhead Housing Association, East Renfrewshire Council, West College Scotland and Impact Arts.

Impact Arts is providing a tutor/interior designer who will teach a range of activities such as inspiration boards, canvas art work, glass/ceramic painting, mosaic work, decorative mirrors, framed art work, furniture upcycling/recycling and painting and decorating techniques. Taking place over 2 days per week, the group will use their new found skills to transform the main space at Barrhead museum, a central hub for youth services in the town.

Lynne Carr, CE Impact Arts said:

“This is an exciting partnership for us. In 2012 we worked with young people in East Renfrewshire to find out what were their barriers to employment. We lit up the High Street to give young people a visual platform to communicate how they were feeling. Barrhead HA and Impact Arts listened to what they said and we’ve worked together to come up with the ‘Drab to Fab’ programme. The workshops will connect local young people to skills, education and employment opportunities and we can’t wait to see the ideas that the young people imagine for the room makeover!”

Shirley Robison, Managing Director at Barrhead Housing Association said:

“Barrhead’s young people deserve an opportunity to try something new. Impact Arts have a great reputation for engaging young people in their community arts’ programmes. These are initial workshops that we hope, with additional funding from the Scottish Government secured before April 2014, will lead to training programmes that will provide each young person with a qualification. Delivered locally, thanks to West College Scotland and the workspace units at Robertson Street and East Renfrewshire Council’s Barrhead Museum, we look forward to building on this initial programme.”

In addition to young people being able to utilise their new found skills in their own homes, the programme will also provide a stepping stone for young people to join Impact Arts life changing employability programme, Creative Pathways, coming to East Renfrewshire in the very near future.
